SR 2019 Small Lot Chardonnay
SR 2019 Small Lot Chardonnay
The Vintage:
The 2019 Vintage was a wild ride for Niagara, the season started with a cool, wet spring that put the vintage generally behind by about two weeks across all appellations. The peak summer months were warm and sunny, with several heat waves that brought high humidity across southeastern and southwestern Ontario, and with some disease pressure in the vineyards. The harvest season was chaotic weather-wise, with warm spells in September, intermitted rainy periods, and sudden cold snaps in October and November, keeping winemakers on their toes.
Tasting Notes:
A rich, complex Chardonnay with a palate that is rich and creamy with a viscous mouthfeel and delicate finishing acidity. The nose is aromatic with Niagara tree fruits, tropical notes of pineapple and starfruit, and rich aromas of vanilla, crème brûlée and caramel. Flavours include pineapple, coconut, vanilla, and lemon custard. A wonderfully complex chardonnay that is ready to drink now or can be aged to 2025.
Technical Notes:
Created from 100% hand-harvested Chardonnay grapes from two vineyards in the Niagara Region, this wine was entirely barrel fermented in 100% new French oak barrels with regular stirring of the lees. The wine was further aged on its lees for 12 months in barrel, with barrel selection and blending occurring prior to bottling in November 2020.
