SR 2019 Small Lot Viognier
SR 2019 Small Lot Viognier
The Vintage:
The 2019 Vintage was a wild ride for Niagara, the season started with a cool, wet spring that put the vintage generally behind by about two weeks across all appellations. The peak summer months were warm and sunny, with several heat waves that brought high humidity across southeastern and southwestern Ontario, and with some disease pressure in the vineyards. The harvest season was chaotic weather-wise, with warm spells in September, intermitted rainy periods, and sudden cold snaps in October and November, keeping winemakers on their toes.
Tasting Notes.
A rich ripe example of Viognier with a perfumed nose of apricot, pineapple, cream, and vanilla. The palate is rich and generous with a full-bodied, viscous mouthfeel capped off with minerality and bright lemon citrus acidity. Full-flavoured notes of pineapple, banana, peach, and starfruit with a soft toasty creamy note.
Technical Notes:
The Viognier grapes were hand harvested from a single vineyard in the Lincoln Lakeshore sub-appellation in Niagara. The grapes showed excellent character, which characteristic ripeness and higher-than-average sugars common to Viognier. The grapes were crushed at the winery and immediately pressed. The juice was fermented at cool temperatures in 60% stainless steel tanks with the remainder in 3, new French oak barrels. After time to age for 7 months in barrel, the wine was blended and bottled July 2020.
